Marc Guehi 'extremely unhappy' with Crystal Palace for blocking £35m Liverpool transfer & considering giving up captaincy

Marc Guehi has reportedly been left "extremely unhappy" after his blockbuster £35 million transfer to ($47m) Liverpool was sensationally scrapped in the final hours of deadline day. The England defender had completed the first stage of his medical, with paperwork filed and even a private jet waiting to whisk him up to Merseyside, only for Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner to pull the plug.

Glasner, whose own contract with the club expires next summer, is understood to have told the board that he would resign immediately if Guehi were sold without a replacement being found. Faced with losing their manager on the eve of a new campaign, chairman Steve Parish reluctantly backtracked on an agreement he had already given Liverpool, as revealed by The Guardian.

That U-turn has devastated Guehi, who believed he was hours away from joining the Reds. The 25-year-old has even suggested he is now questioning his future as Palace captain. While Guehi has no plans to down tools, unlike Alexander Isak who effectively went on strike before sealing his switch to Anfield, the mood inside the Eagles’ camp is said to be tense, with team-matesequally frustrated by the collapsed deal.

Liverpool, who had identified Guehi as a cornerstone for their defensive rebuild, were left stunned by the last-minute collapse. Arne Slot’s side had even submitted the official deal sheet before the 7pm deadline confident they had their man. Instead, the Reds must wait until January to see if they can tempt Palace back to the table. By then, Guehi will be in the final six months of his deal, meaning he can open talks with foreign clubs. That possibility has already alerted Barcelona, and Juventus, who are closely tracking the situation.

With just a year left on his contract, Palace face a nightmare scenario: risk losing their star defender for nothing next summer or bow to pressure and sell in January. Parish and the board are expected to try once more to convince Guehi to sign an extension, but after the breakdown of his Liverpool move, fresh negotiations could prove extremely difficult. Should he choose not to renew, Guehi would be one of the most sought-after free agents in Europe.
